Max Wellman, in conjunction with Civic Music Association’s
Backstage Social Group, is proud to present an evening of jazz
& standards brought to you by a classically trained string quartet.
In this groundbreaking event, Des Moines natives Max Wellman
& Sam Wells will be presenting the art songs of the United States
- songs written by the likes of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, & more -
through a classical medium. In the tradition of composers such
as Aaron Copland or George Gershwin, composer Sam Wells is
taking the American Songbook to new heights, amplifying the
raw beauty of these songs through a classical lens.
Wellman’s string quartet will have just completed a week of
recording at Capp Audio Productions in preparation for a
new album to be released later this year. The quartet comes
from many different backgrounds, but all 4 musicians are
graduate students at Indiana University’s prestigious
Jacobs School of Music, where Mr. Wells is currently
pursuing his own Master’s degree in composition &
trumpet performance.
